What can I do for my audition with Theatre Works?

Depending on his/her age and the class he/she wishes to be placed in, your child may need to pass an audition. The audition is not to determine entry into the school, but a tool used to place your child in the class that will be more beneficial for his or her learning experience. Students are grouped into classes according to age and ability. Students aged 7-10 will be required to have a brief assessment (no audition necessary). Students in Junior 3 will be required to sing a song and do a short reading. Students in Junior 4 and up will be required to present a monologue (minimum one minute) and a song (please bring a CD, cassette or sheet music). Audition times will be given upon registration.

If you need help finding a monologue or a song to sing, there are many places that can help you find one. The Internet is a great place for finding monologues, just be sure that you find one appropriate for your age group. The library has many books collecting monologues and lots of sheet music and cassettes and CDs. You can take a monologue from a play if you wish to do so. You can also buy sheet music at stores such as Rideau.

At an audition, presentation is very important. Wear neutral clothes that do not limit your movement, tie your hair back, and remove all jewelry. This way, we can see your facial expressions without anything distracting us. Being prepared shows that you have a good sense of responsibility, so be sure to have your monologue and song memorized, and don't forget your CD, cassette or sheet music. If you mess up, don't worry! Just ad lib or start from the beginning again. Smile, and be polite, even though you may be nervous. The more confident you appear, the better the impression you will make.
